Feet and Inches to CM Converter: Convert Height Instantly
This feet and inches to cm converter turns a height written in feet and inches into centimeters and meters, and it works in reverse as a cm to feet and inches tool. It is a plain inches to centimeters calculator for US users who need one exact number for a form, a profile or a travel document.
Short answer
One inch equals 2.54 centimeters, so a feet to cm conversion is: total inches (feet × 12 + inches) multiplied by 2.54. The ft to cm shortcut for whole feet is feet × 12 × 2.54, and the cm to inches direction divides by the same factor instead of multiplying. If you are wondering how many cm in a foot or how many cm in an inch: a foot holds 12 inches, so multiply the inch factor by 12 for one foot.
What this tool does not do: it does not interpret your height. No growth tracking, BMI, health meaning, clothing size or medical advice is produced here — only unit conversion.

Estimate with limitations
—
Step by step
Limitation next to the result: the conversion factor comes from an editable default that was not source-verified. Rule status for the factor source; the arithmetic itself is exact decimal math. Confirm the factor with the NIST Office of Weights and Measures before using the number on an official document.
The tool does not interpret height: no health, growth or BMI meaning is implied.

How to use the calculator
- Pick a direction: feet and inches to cm, or cm to feet and inches.
- Enter feet and inches (inches may be a decimal such as 5.5), or switch to total inches, or enter centimeters in reverse.
- Choose how many decimal places you want for the answer.
- Press Convert. Read the centimeters, meters, total inches, the reverse reading and the step-by-step arithmetic.
- Use Copy results or Print summary if you need the number on a form. Nothing leaves your browser.
How the ft to cm conversion is calculated
The engine uses exact decimal arithmetic (integer-scaled numbers), never raw binary floating point, so a displayed value such as 171.5 cm does not drift by a hidden fraction.
- Total inches = feet × 12 + inches.
- Centimeters = total inches × factor (default 2.54 cm per inch).
- Meters = centimeters ÷ 100.
- Reverse: total inches = centimeters ÷ factor; feet = whole inches ÷ 12 rounded down; remaining inches = total inches − feet × 12.
- Rounding happens at display only, half up. If rounded inches reach 12, the tool carries one foot and shows 0 inches — never 5 feet 12 inches.
The inches to centimeters calculator keeps the factor visible and editable so you can see exactly what number produced the result. The cm to inches direction divides by the same factor.
Worked examples
Examples below were computed with exact decimal arithmetic using the default factor 2.54. Treat them as arithmetic illustrations, not as an official measurement.
| Height in feet and inches | Total inches | Centimeters (exact) | Displayed at 1 decimal |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 ft 6 in | 66 | 167.64 | 167.6 cm |
| 5 ft 7.5 in | 67.5 | 171.45 | 171.5 cm |
| 5 ft 10 in | 70 | 177.8 | 177.8 cm |
| 6 ft 0 in | 72 | 182.88 | 182.9 cm |
Reverse examples: 180 cm equals about 70.87 inches, which reads as 5 ft 10.9 in at one decimal. 182.8 cm is about 71.97 inches; rounded to whole inches that is 72, shown as 6 ft 0 in — the carry rule at work.
Comparison: which direction do you need?
| Question you have | Direction | Arithmetic | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| “I am 5 ft 10 in — what is that in centimeters?” | feet and inches to cm | multiply by 2.54 | convert feet to inches first |
| “My passport lists 177 cm — what is that in feet and inches?” | cm to feet and inches | divide by 2.54, then split by 12 | the 12-inch carry after rounding |
| “I only know my height in inches.” | inches to cm | inches × 2.54 | do not add an extra × 12 |
| “I need the number in meters too.” | either | cm ÷ 100 | keep full precision until display |
Comparison: how many decimal places should you keep?
| Decimal places | Shown as | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 171 cm | quick estimates | loses almost half a centimeter |
| 1 | 171.5 cm | forms and profiles (default) | still rounds half up |
| 2 | 171.45 cm | records that want more detail | more digits than most forms need |
| 3 | 171.450 cm | comparisons and charts | long number to type by hand |

Common mistakes and key conditions
- Forgetting the extra 12. 5 ft 10 in is 70 inches, not 5.83 inches — multiply feet by 12 first.
- Rounding too early. Keep full precision until the display step, or the last digit will drift.
- Showing 5 ft 12 in. If rounding pushes the inches to 12, carry a foot. This tool does that automatically.
- Mixing definitions. Old US survey feet are a different length from the international foot. This converter does not use survey feet and does not mix them in.
- Entering inches of 12 or more. The tool normalizes the value (for example 5 ft 14 in becomes 6 ft 2 in) and tells you it did so.
- Negative or empty fields. You get a plain validation message instead of a number.
FAQ
How many cm in an inch?
With the default factor the tool uses, one inch is 2.54 centimeters. Confirm it with the NIST Office of Weights and Measures before relying on it.
How many cm in a foot?
A foot is 12 inches, so multiply the inch factor by 12. With the default 2.54 that is 30.48 centimeters per foot. Same caveat: the factor was not source-verified.
What is the exact feet and inches to cm formula?
Total inches = feet × 12 + inches. Centimeters = total inches × the factor (default 2.54). Meters = centimeters ÷ 100.
How do I convert cm to feet and inches?
Divide the centimeters by the factor to get total inches, take the whole feet as inches ÷ 12 rounded down, and keep the remainder as inches. If the remaining inches round to 12, carry one foot.
Can I enter half inches?
Yes. Inches accept decimals such as 5.5 or 7.25. The engine stores the value as scaled integers, so the result stays exact until the display rounding you choose.
Does the tool use the US survey foot?
No. Survey foot and other legacy definitions are out of scope here and are never mixed into the conversion.
Is this medical or growth advice?
No. It is a unit converter. It does not compute BMI, growth percentiles, clothing sizes or any health meaning of height.
Do my inputs leave the browser?
No. All arithmetic runs on your device. The optional save button stores non-sensitive numbers in this browser only, and the delete button removes them.
Glossary
- Inch
- A unit of length in US customary units. The tool treats one inch as the editable factor in centimeters (default 2.54).
- Foot
- Twelve inches. The feet-to-inches step of the conversion uses this definition exactly.
- Centimeter
- A metric unit of length. One meter is 100 centimeters.
- Total inches
- Height expressed as a single inch number before multiplying by the factor: feet × 12 + inches.
- Carry
- When rounded inches reach 12, one foot is added and the inches reset to zero (for example 5 ft 12 in becomes 6 ft 0 in).
- Exact decimal arithmetic
- Calculations kept in scaled integers so binary floating-point error never appears in a displayed result.

Limitations, exclusions and assumptions
- The conversion factor defaults to 2.54 cm per inch but was not source-verified; confirm with NIST before official use.
- Height percentile charts, BMI, clothing sizes, survey feet and construction tolerances are excluded on purpose.
- Inches are entered as decimals; fractional-inch entry (for example 5 5/8) is not built in this version.
- The page stores nothing on a server. The optional save uses this browser's local storage only.
- No credentialed human review was performed; the byline is the Varnda Editorial Team.
