Weighted Grade Calculator: Find Your Course Grade by Category Weights
Short answer: Enter each category, its score, and its weight. The calculator multiplies score by weight, adds the products, and divides by the total weight. If every category is graded and the weights total 100%, the result is your course grade.
If you need a class grade calculator with weights for one course, enter each category from your syllabus below. This page also works as a grade weight calculator and a weighted average calculator for one course at a time.
This tool is for students in the United States whose syllabus lists category weights. It does not know your instructor's dropped-score, curve, or minimum-exam rules. Treat the result as arithmetic based on the numbers you enter.

Contribution of each category
Each contribution is score multiplied by weight. When weights total 100%, the contribution is in percentage points toward the course grade.

Target planner for a pending category
To use this as a weighted grade calculator with final exam work still to come, choose one pending category such as the final exam, enter a target course grade, and the calculator solves for the score that category must earn.
How the weighted grade is built
Each row shows one category's share of the final grade. Bars are scaled to the largest contribution.
Weighted average respects category weights. Simple average treats every category equally.
How to use this calculator
Copy the categories and weights from your syllabus exactly as they are printed; the tool works as a syllabus grade calculator only when the weights match the page your instructor published.
- Add one row for each grading category on your syllabus.
- Choose percent if your score is already a percentage. Choose points if you have earned points and possible points.
- Enter the category weight exactly as the syllabus states it.
- Mark a category as pending if it has not been graded yet.
- Check the total weight. A standard course grade assumes the weights total 100%.
- Read the grade on completed work first if any category is still pending.
- Use the target planner to find the score a pending category must earn.
Calculation method and formula
How to calculate weighted grade by hand: multiply each category score by its weight, add the products, then divide by the total weight. The same logic answers how to calculate weighted average for any set of weighted numbers, not only grades.
Weighted grade = sum(score for each category x weight for that category) / sum(weights for the categories included).
If the weights total 100%, this becomes sum(score x weight) / 100. Each category's contribution in percentage points is score x weight / total weight.
Grade on completed work uses only graded categories and their weights. It is not a prediction of the final course grade unless every category is graded.
Required score in pending category k = (target grade x total weight - sum of graded score x weight) / weight of category k. The result is shown as unreachable above 100% unless extra credit is allowed.
Because each score and each weight is a percentage, the tool also serves as a weighted percentage calculator and a weighted score calculator: every result, including each category's weighted score, is shown in percentage points.
All arithmetic uses exact decimal handling in the browser. Displayed values are rounded to 2 decimals by default; category contributions are not rounded before summing.
Worked examples (hypothetical numbers)
These examples test the arithmetic. They are not records of any real course.
| Category | Score | Weight | Contribution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Homework | 90 | 20 | 18.00 |
| Quizzes | 80 | 30 | 24.00 |
| Midterm | 75 | 20 | 15.00 |
| Final | 85 | 30 | 25.50 |
| Total | 100 | 82.50 |
Weighted course grade = 18 + 24 + 15 + 25.5 = 82.50%.
| Category | Score | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Homework | 90 | 20 |
| Quizzes | 80 | 30 |
| Midterm | 75 | 20 |
| Final | Pending | 30 |
Grade on completed work = (90 x 20 + 80 x 30 + 75 x 20) / 70 = 57 / 70 x 100 = 81.43%.
Required final exam score for an 85% course grade = (85 x 100 - 5700) / 30 = 93.33%.
Comparison table 1: weighted grade vs grade on completed work
| Question | Weighted course grade | Grade on completed work |
|---|---|---|
| When is it valid? | Only when every category is graded | Any time, using graded categories only |
| What it answers | Final course grade under the entered weights | Current standing before remaining work |
| Risk if used too early | Can look final when work remains | Can overstate standing if pending work is hard |
Comparison table 2: weighted average vs simple average
| Method | Formula | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Weighted average | Sum(score x weight) / sum(weights) | Syllabus categories with different importance |
| Simple average | Sum(scores) / number of categories | Categories with equal importance |
| Points-based total | Total earned points / total possible points | Single point pool, not category weights |
Common mistakes and key conditions
- Using weights that do not total 100% without noticing the warning.
- Treating a grade on completed work as the final course grade.
- Entering points in a percent field, or percent in a points field.
- Ignoring dropped lowest scores, curves, or minimum exam requirements set by the instructor.
- Assuming a required score above 100% is possible without extra credit.
- Rounding category contributions before adding them.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a weighted grade?
Multiply each category score by its weight, add the products, and divide by the total weight. If the weights total 100%, dividing by 100 gives the course grade.
What is a weighted average grade calculator used for?
It combines scores from categories such as homework, quizzes, exams, and projects when each category has a different weight.
How do I calculate a grade with weights?
Enter the score and weight for each category. The calculator applies the weighted average formula and shows each category's contribution.
What if my weights do not total 100%?
By default the whole-course result is blocked and explained. You can choose normalization, which divides by the sum of entered weights and labels the result as based on entered weights only.
How do I find the score needed on a final exam?
Mark the final exam as pending, enter a target grade, and use the target planner. It solves for the pending category score.
Why is my grade on completed work different from my course grade?
Completed work excludes pending categories. The course grade includes every category once all are graded.
Can a required score be above 100%?
Yes. The tool reports it as unreachable unless extra credit is allowed, in which case it still shows the required score.
Does this calculator handle weighted GPA?
No. Weighted GPA uses credit hours and grade points, not course category weights. Use a GPA calculator for that.
What does points vs weighted grading mean?
Points grading adds earned points and divides by possible points. Weighted grading gives categories different importance through weights.
Are letter grades official?
No. Letter cutoffs are editable conventions. Your institution sets the official cutoffs.

Related topics
Weighted GPA is a different calculation based on credit hours and grade points rather than category weights, so use a GPA calculator when you need that figure. A final grade calculator answers what score a single remaining assignment must earn, which is what the target planner above already does for this course.
Official references and last checked
Weighted average is standard arithmetic; your syllabus and institution policy govern the actual grade.
Useful starting points: your course syllabus, your registrar or teaching center, and your learning management system gradebook. No state, county, or city rule applies to this calculation.
Limitations and exclusions
This calculator does not model dropped lowest scores, curves, grade replacement, minimum exam requirements, extra credit rules beyond the flag, or instructor discretion. It does not calculate weighted GPA. It does not promise a final course grade.
