Leap Day Note
Your birthday is February 29. In non-leap years, this calculator treats your birthday as February 28 (calculator convention). Legal treatment of February 29 birthdays in non-leap years varies by jurisdiction and purpose. This tool does not provide legal advice.

How the Age Is Calculated
This calculator uses calendar arithmetic on integer year, month, and day values. No time of day, no time zone, and no JavaScript Date string parsing (which can shift dates due to UTC interpretation).
Step-by-Step Method
- Parse the date of birth and the as-of date into integer parts: year, month, day.
- Find the largest whole number of months n such that the date of birth plus n months (with month-end clamping) is on or before the as-of date.
- Month-end clamping: adding a month to January 31 gives February 28 (or 29 in a leap year), not March 3.
- February 29 birthdays: in non-leap years the clamped date is February 28.
- Years = n // 12 (integer division). Months = n % 12 (remainder).
- Days = as-of date minus the anchor date (date of birth plus n months, clamped).
- Total days = calendar difference between the two dates.
- Total weeks = floor(total days / 7). Remaining days = total days % 7.
- Next birthday = first date after the as-of date where the birth month and day (clamped for Feb 29) occurs.
- Weekday of birth = day of week of the date of birth (Gregorian calendar).
Worked Example
Hypothetical: Date of birth , as of .
- Months from 1990-05-15 to 2026-10-15 = 437 months (36 years × 12 + 5 months). Adding 437 months to 1990-05-15 lands exactly on 2026-10-15.
- Days from 2026-10-15 to 2026-10-16 = 1 day.
- Result: 36 years, 5 months, 1 day.
- Total days = 13,303. Total weeks = 1,900 weeks + 3 days.
- Next birthday = 2027-05-15 (211 days from 2026-10-16).
- Weekday of birth = Tuesday.
Leap Year Rule (Gregorian Calendar)
A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except century years not divisible by 400. For example, 2000 and 2024 are leap years; 1900 and 2100 are not. This rule is used for month-end clamping and total-day counts. Sources: NIST and U.S. Naval Observatory (calendar and leap-year information).
Common Mistakes
- Using the JavaScript
Dateconstructor on date strings — it parses as UTC and can shift the local date by one day. - Ignoring month lengths (e.g., assuming every month has 30 days).
- Mishandling February 29 in non-leap years.
- Counting the birth date as day 1 instead of day 0.
- Treating the calculated age as proof of legal eligibility for driving, voting, alcohol, Medicare, Social Security, or school enrollment. Legal ages vary by state and purpose.

Age Calculation Process
Frequently Asked Questions
How old am I exactly?
Enter your date of birth above. The calculator returns your age in years, months, and days, plus total days, weeks, and months. The result is based on calendar arithmetic using the Gregorian calendar.
How do I calculate my age in years, months, and days?
The calculator finds the largest whole number of months from your birth date to the as-of date (with month-end clamping), then converts to years and months. Remaining days are counted from the anchor date to the as-of date.
How many days old am I?
The Total Days result shows the exact calendar-day difference between your date of birth and the as-of date. This is not an approximation; it counts every day.
How many days until my next birthday?
The Next Birthday result shows the date of your next birthday and the number of days from the as-of date to that birthday. For February 29 births, the next birthday in a non-leap year is treated as February 28.
What day of the week was I born?
The Weekday of Birth result shows the day of the week (Monday through Sunday) for your date of birth using the Gregorian calendar.
Can I calculate how old I will be on a future date?
Yes. Use the As Of Date field to enter any past or future date. The calculator will show your age as of that date.
Can I calculate the age difference between two people?
Yes. Enter a second date of birth in the Age Difference section. The calculator shows the difference in years, months, and days and indicates which person is older.
How does the calculator handle February 29 birthdays?
In non-leap years, a February 29 birthday is treated as February 28 (calculator convention). This is shown in the results with a visible note. Legal treatment of February 29 birthdays in non-leap years varies by jurisdiction and purpose. This tool does not provide legal advice.
Is my date of birth stored or sent anywhere?
No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser. Your date of birth is never placed in the URL, never sent to any server, and never stored unless you explicitly enable the Save inputs locally toggle, which defaults to OFF.
Does this calculator determine legal age for driving, voting, or drinking?
No. Legal age thresholds vary by federal and state law and by program (driving, voting, alcohol, Medicare, Social Security, school enrollment). This calculator provides calendar arithmetic only. The milestone dates shown are informational calendar dates, not eligibility determinations.
Glossary
- Chronological Age
- The exact time elapsed from date of birth to a given date, expressed in years, months, and days.
- As-of Date
- Month-End Clamping
- When adding months to a date, if the resulting month has fewer days, the day is clamped to the last day of that month (e.g., Jan 31 + 1 month = Feb 28 or 29).
- Gregorian Calendar
- The calendar system used internationally, with leap years every 4 years except century years not divisible by 400.
- Leap Year
- A year with 366 days (February has 29 days). Rule: divisible by 4, except century years not divisible by 400.
- Anchor Date
- The date of birth plus the whole number of months that fits within the as-of date. The remaining days are counted from this anchor.
