Tip Calculator
Use this restaurant tip calculator (and delivery, salon, or any bill) to find the tip amount and the total with tip from your bill, tax, and tip percentage. You choose the tip percentage, the base (pre-tax or post-tax), rounding, and how many people split the total.
What this tool does not do: it does not set a required tip percentage, does not calculate tip payroll taxes for workers, and does not handle itemized per-item bill splitting. Tipping percentages are social customs, not laws.

Tip = tip % × base, where base is the pre-tax bill (default) or bill + tax. Total = bill + tax + tip. Effective tip % = (total − bill − tax) ÷ bill × 100 after rounding. Tip is rounded half up to the cent.
No US federal or state rule sets a required customer tip percentage (calculator convention). Optional reference starting points the reader may check: U.S. DOL Wage and Hour DivisionFigures you enter drive the result.
Privacy: the calculation runs in your browser. Bill and tip values are not sent to a server.
Pre-tax and post-tax tip side by side
Should you tip on tax? Many people choose the pre-tax subtotal; others use the full receipt total. The table below always shows both bases with the same tip percentage so the dollar difference is clear.

Choose the tip base (pre-tax default, or bill plus tax) and any rounding option.
Set the number of people for an even split, or leave it at 1.
If a service charge is already on the bill, switch the service-charge toggle on so the extra tip starts at $0.00.
The tip amount calculator updates immediately. Your Money or Your Life note: treat tip choices as part of your dining budget; this page does not give financial advice.
How to calculate tip and total
Every symbol is defined below. Arithmetic uses exact decimal steps; the tip is rounded half up to the cent; the effective percentage is shown to two decimal places. Use the round up tip calculator options (round total up or round tip up) when you prefer a whole-dollar figure; the effective percentage beside the result shows the real rate after that change.
Base = bill before tax, or bill before tax + tax, depending on the tip base toggle.
Tip = tip percentage ÷ 100 × base, then rounded half up to the nearest cent.
Total with tip = bill + tax + tip.
Effective tip % = (total − bill − tax) ÷ bill × 100, after any rounding, shown to 0.01.
Per person = total ÷ people, allocated in exact cents by largest remainder (ties go to the lowest person number).
Rounding the total up to the next dollar changes the tip, and the page shows the resulting effective percentage next to the result. Rounding the tip up to the next dollar works the same way.
How to calculate 20 percent tip in your head
Move the decimal one place left to get 10 percent, then double it for 20 percent. On a hypothetical $50.00 pre-tax bill: 10% is $5.00, so 20% is $10.00. For 15%, take 10% plus half of 10%. For 25%, double 10% then add another 2.5% (half of 5%).

Worked examples (hypothetical numbers)
These examples use clearly labelled hypothetical inputs to show the substitution step by step. They test arithmetic only, not law or local custom.
Example A — 20% on the pre-tax bill
Inputs (hypothetical): bill $86.40, tax $7.13, tip percentage 20%, base = pre-tax.
Substitution: Tip = 20 ÷ 100 × 86.40 = 17.28. Total = 86.40 + 7.13 + 17.28 = 110.81. Effective tip % = 17.28 ÷ 86.40 × 100 = 20.00%.
Result: tip $17.28, total with tip $110.81.
Example B — same bill, 20% on the post-tax base
Inputs (hypothetical): bill $86.40, tax $7.13, tip percentage 20%, base = bill plus tax.
Substitution: Base = 86.40 + 7.13 = 93.53. Tip = 20 ÷ 100 × 93.53 = 18.706 → 18.71 (half up to the cent). Total = 86.40 + 7.13 + 18.71 = 112.24. Difference from the pre-tax tip = 18.71 − 17.28 = 1.43.
Result: tip $18.71, total with tip $112.24, $1.43 more tip than Example A.
Example C — round the total up to the next whole dollar
Inputs (hypothetical): same as Example A with rounding = round total up.
Substitution: Unrounded total = 110.81. Rounded total = 111.00. Tip becomes 111.00 − 86.40 − 7.13 = 17.47. Effective tip % = 17.47 ÷ 86.40 × 100 ≈ 20.22%.
Result: tip $17.47, total $111.00, effective tip 20.22% — not exactly 20% any more.
Example D — round the tip up, then split three ways
Inputs (hypothetical): Example A with rounding = round tip up, people = 3.
Substitution: Unrounded tip = 17.28 → rounded tip up = 18.00. Total = 86.40 + 7.13 + 18.00 = 111.53. Effective tip % = 18.00 ÷ 86.40 × 100 ≈ 20.83%. Per person on the rounded-total variant of $111.00 among 3 people: 37.00 each (exact).
Result: tip $18.00, total $111.53, effective tip 20.83%.

Even split among the table
The tip calculator split feature divides the total evenly among up to 50 people. Cents are allocated by largest remainder so the parts add up exactly; ties go to the lowest person number. For itemized splits (different items for different people), use a dedicated bill-split tool — that feature is outside this page’s scope.
Example: $111.00 among 3 people is $37.00 each (exact).
Common mistakes when calculating a tip
Tipping on a different base than you intended. If you mean to tip on the food subtotal but type the post-tax total into the bill field, the tip rises with the tax. Use the bill-before-tax box for the pre-tax base.
Rounding up without noticing the effective percentage. Rounding the total or tip up to the next dollar is convenient, but the real percentage is often a little higher than the button you pressed. Check the effective tip % beside the result.
Tipping twice when a service charge is already included. Automatic gratuity or a mandatory service charge may already be on the receipt. Switch the service-charge toggle on so the extra tip starts at $0.00.
Entering the post-tax total as the bill. The receipt “Total” line before you add tip already includes tax. Put only the pre-tax subtotal in the bill field and the tax figure in the tax field.
Assuming delivery or counter tips follow the same path. Delivery, takeout, haircuts, rides, and hotel stays are separate choices with their own norms. This tool computes the arithmetic you enter; it does not decide who or how much to tip.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip at a restaurant?
No US federal or state rule sets a required tip percentage for customers. Tipping is a social custom; the percentage is your choice. This page does not label any percentage as standard or required. Enter the tip percentage you intend to leave and the tool shows the tip amount and total with tip.
Should you tip on tax?
You can tip on the pre-tax bill or on the bill plus tax. This calculator defaults to the pre-tax base and shows post-tax results side by side with the dollar difference so you can see how the base changes the tip. There is no legal requirement modeled here either way.
How to calculate 20 percent tip?
Take 10 percent by moving the decimal one place left, then double that number. On a $50.00 bill, 10 percent is $5.00 and 20 percent is $10.00. The quick-reference table above repeats this check for other common percentages on the bill you entered.
What is a gratuity, and is it different from a tip?
In everyday US usage, gratuity and tip both mean a voluntary extra payment to service staff. Some receipts print an automatic gratuity or service charge; that line is already part of the bill. If you mark service charge included, this tool sets the extra tip to $0.00 so you are not led into double tipping.
Does the tip percentage on the button mean that rate is standard?
No. The preset buttons are selectable values only. Customs vary by place, party size, and type of service, and they are not modeled as rules on this page. Choose the tip percentage that fits your situation.
How do I split the tip evenly with friends?
Set the number of people (1 to 50) and the per-person figure shows the exact share of the total, allocated in whole cents. For itemized splitting by dish or seat, you need a bill-split tool; that is outside this calculator scope.
Glossary
Tip
A voluntary extra payment you add to a bill for service.
Gratuity
Another word for tip; on some receipts it appears as an automatic line already included in the bill.
Service charge
A fee the business adds to the bill. If one is present, mark the service-charge toggle so the extra tip starts at $0.00.
Tip base
The amount the percentage multiplies: the pre-tax bill (default) or the bill plus tax.
Effective tip percentage
The real percentage of the pre-tax bill after any rounding is applied: (total − bill − tax) ÷ bill × 100.
Largest remainder split
A way to divide a total into exact cents so the parts add up; leftover cents go to the lowest person numbers first.
