Final Grade Calculator: What Do You Need on Your Final?
This final grade calculator tells you the score you need on your final exam to hit a target course grade, shows whether that target is still reachable, and works out the course grade a hypothetical final exam score would produce. It works as a final exam calculator and as a course grade calculator for one class, so you can see the finish line before exam day. It runs entirely in your browser using standard weighted-average arithmetic.
Short answer
Enter your current course grade, the final exam's weight, and your target grade. The required score is (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight. If the answer is above 100%, the target is out of reach without extra credit. If it is at or below 0%, you have already secured that grade before the exam.

What this tool does not do
It does not know your instructor's curves, extra credit, dropped lowest scores, replacement policies, participation rules or pass/fail marks. Letter cutoffs are an editable convention you control, not an official standard. Treat every cutoff and policy input as unverified (status: NOT VERIFIED) and check your syllabus.

Required score for each target grade
What do I need on my final for every letter at once? This table shows the score needed for each cutoff you set above, with your current grade and weight.
| Target | Course grade | Score needed on final | Status |
|---|
All values assume the final is the only remaining assessment and that your current grade covers exactly the rest of the course (1 − weight).

How to use this calculator
- Find your current grade. Open your learning portal and read the course grade on everything graded so far, as a percentage.
- Find the final's weight. The syllabus usually says something like "the final is worth 30% of the course grade." Enter that number.
- Set a target. Type the course grade you want, or tap a letter chip to load your cutoff.
- Read the required score. The big number is the score you need on the final exam. A status line tells you if it is already secured, still reachable, or impossible without extra credit.
- Optional: test a score. Enter a hypothetical final exam score to see the course grade it would produce, so you know how risky the exam really is.
How to calculate final grade: the formula
A course grade with one exam left is a weighted average. Your current grade covers the share of the course already graded, and the final covers the remaining share. Let w be the final's weight as a decimal (30% becomes 0.30).
Grade needed on final exam = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w
Resulting course grade = current × (1 − w) + final × w
The first formula answers "what grade do i need on the final" for any target. The second answers "what will my final grade be" for a score you expect to earn. The current grade is assumed to represent exactly the share (1 − w) of the course that is already graded; if other assignments remain, this tool cannot see them.
Worked by hand: with a current grade of 85%, a final worth 30%, and a target of 90%, you keep 85 × 0.70 = 59.5 points already, so you need 90 − 59.5 = 30.5 more points, and 30.5 ÷ 0.30 = 101.67%. That target needs more than a perfect score.
Worked examples (hypothetical inputs)
| Current | Final weight | Target or score | Result | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 85% | 30% | Target 90% | 101.7% needed | Not reachable without extra credit: over 100%. |
| 88% | 20% | Target 80% | 48.0% needed | Comfortable margin; a 48% on the final still lands an 80% course grade. |
| 72% | 40% | Final scored 80% | Course grade 75.2% | Resulting grade, not a requirement: 72 × 0.60 + 80 × 0.40. |
| 95% | 25% | Target 90% | 75.0% needed | You can afford a 75% on the final and still keep a 90% course grade. |
These are hypothetical examples for arithmetic only. They show how to calculate final grade scenarios, not any school's policy.
Comparison 1: how the final's weight changes what you need
A student with an 85% current grade aiming for a 90% course grade. The heavier the final, the higher the score required, because more of the grade hangs on one exam.
| Final weight | Points already secured | Score needed on final | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10% | 76.5 | 135.0% | Out of reach |
| 20% | 68.0 | 110.0% | Out of reach |
| 30% | 59.5 | 101.7% | Out of reach |
| 40% | 51.0 | 65.0% | Reachable |
| 50% | 42.5 | 95.0% | Reachable but demanding |
Hypothetical: current 85%, target 90%. Low weights make a high target harder to reach, because your existing grade is already short of the target and the exam cannot make up enough points.
Comparison 2: the lowest grade you can get on the final
The lowest grade you can get on the final while still hitting each target, for a student at 88% with a final worth 20%. Anything at or above the number in the middle column keeps that target.
| Target letter | Lowest score that works | Cushion from current pace |
|---|---|---|
| A (90%) | 92.0% | You are above pace |
| B (80%) | 48.0% | Large cushion |
| C (70%) | 8.0% | Almost secured |
| D (60%) | 0.0% or lower | Already secured before the exam |
Hypothetical: current 88%, weight 20%. A requirement at or below 0% means the target is secured whatever you score (the exam cannot drop you below it under this model).

Common mistakes and key conditions
✓ Correct setup
- Use the course percentage from your portal, not points from a single assignment.
- Enter the final's weight as a share of the whole course grade.
- Assume the current grade already covers everything except the final.
- Edit the letter cutoffs to match your syllabus before trusting a letter target.
- Read the status line: secured, reachable, or needs more than 100%.
✗ Mistakes that give a wrong answer
- Treating a 90% on the final as a 90-point boost instead of a weighted 90%.
- Using a weight of 0% (no solution exists) or ignoring a 100% weight.
- Assuming curves, extra credit or dropped scores this tool cannot see.
- Assuming a standard 90/80/70/60 cutoff table applies at every school.
- Forgetting other remaining assignments, which makes every number optimistic.
FAQ
What do i need to get on my final to pass?
Use the passing mark your syllabus states (often 60% or 70% of the course grade) as the target. The calculator returns the score needed on the final for that target: required = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight. With a 70% current grade and a 30% final weight, holding a 70% course grade means you need 70% on the final itself. If the result is at or below 0%, you have already passed before the exam. Pass marks are set by your instructor or school; this tool does not verify them.
How much is my final worth?
The final exam's weight is stated in your syllabus as a percentage of the course grade, for example 20%, 30% or 40%. Enter that number as the final weight. The weight decides how far one exam score can move your course grade: at 10% the final barely matters, at 50% it can reverse almost any current standing.
Can I fail the final and still pass the class?
Set your passing target and read the required score. If the required score is 0% or lower, the math says the pass is already secured whatever you score on the exam. If it is above 0%, scoring below that number drops you under the passing mark under this model. Curves, lowest-score drops and instructor discretion are not included, so check with your instructor when a result is close.
What if the required score is above 100%?
Then the target is not reachable from the exam alone: even a perfect score leaves you short. Typical responses are to lower the target, confirm the weight you entered, or ask whether extra credit exists. The calculator flags this state explicitly instead of showing a number as if it were achievable.
What is the lowest grade I can get on final?
The lowest grade that still works is exactly the required score for your target: anything at or above that number keeps the target, anything below it misses the target. Read it in the result panel above, or scan the Comparison 2 table for your own inputs. A requirement at or below 0% means the target is already secured before you walk into the exam.
How to calculate final grade if the final is worth 100% or 0%?
A 0% weight has no solution because the exam cannot change anything, so the calculator blocks it. At a 100% weight the course grade equals the final exam score and your current grade is irrelevant; the calculator explains this rather than dividing by a weight that removes the current grade from the formula.

Limitations, exclusions and assumptions
- Assumes the final is the only remaining assessment and that your current grade covers exactly (1 − weight) of the course.
- Excludes curves, extra credit, dropped lowest scores, replacement policies, participation scores and instructor discretion.
- Does not compute GPA, pass/fail rules or credit-hour effects.
- Letter cutoffs are a user-editable convention; no cutoff table was verified against any official source in this build (status: NOT VERIFIED).
- Results are shown to one decimal place with the two-decimal value in the steps; comparisons against 100% and 0% use unrounded values.
- Nothing here is a promise of a final grade; your instructor makes the final determination.
