Short Answer

Enter your goal, current savings, time frame, and APY above to see the required monthly deposit, months to reach your goal, or projected balance. This monthly savings goal calculator helps you calculate monthly savings to reach goal targets efficiently.

How the Calculator Works

This savings calculator with interest has three modes, each answering a different planning question:

  • Required Monthly Deposit: You know the goal, current savings, target date (or months), and APY. The calculator tells you how much to save each month.
  • Time to Reach Goal: You know the goal, current savings, monthly deposit, and APY. The calculator tells you how many months until you reach the goal.
  • Projected Balance: You know the current savings, monthly deposit, APY, and number of months. The calculator tells you the future balance.

All modes use the same core mathematics. The APY is converted to an exact monthly rate i = (1 + APY)1/12 − 1, consistent with the Regulation DD (Truth in Savings) definition of APY at 12 CFR Part 1030. Deposits are assumed at the end of each month.

How to Calculate Monthly Savings Goals

Formulas

Let:

  • G = savings goal
  • S = current savings (starting balance)
  • n = number of months
  • i = monthly rate = (1 + APY)1/12 − 1
  • PMT = monthly deposit (end of month)

Future balance after n months:

Balance = S × (1 + i)^n + PMT × ((1 + i)^n − 1) / i

If i = 0 (0% APY):

Balance = S + PMT × n

Required monthly deposit (solve for PMT):

PMT = (G − S × (1 + i)^n) × i / ((1 + i)^n − 1)

If i = 0:

PMT = (G − S) / n

Time to goal (smallest n where Balance ≥ G):

Solved by iteration. If PMT = 0 and i = 0, the goal is never reached unless S ≥ G.

Worked Example (S1)

Goal $25,000.00; current savings $3,000.00; 36 months; 4.00% APY.

  1. Monthly rate i = (1.04)1/12 − 1 = 0.0032737398 (0.32737398%)
  2. S × (1 + i)36 = 3,000 × 1.04 = $3,120.00
  3. Numerator = (25,000 − 3,120) × 0.0032737398 = $71.54
  4. Denominator = 1.04 − 1 = 0.04
  5. PMT = 71.54 / 0.04 = $1,788.50 per month? Wait — re-check: the formula uses the monthly rate in both numerator and denominator. Correct calculation: PMT = (25,000 − 3,120) × 0.0032737398 / 0.04 = $566.98. Rounded up to the next cent = $566.99 so the goal is not missed by rounding.

Zero-Rate Example (S2)

Same goal, start, and term at 0.00% APY.

PMT = (25,000 − 3,000) / 36 = $611.111… → rounded up = $611.12

Time-to-Goal Example (S3)

Goal $25,000.00; current savings $3,000.00; deposit $500.00/month; 4.00% APY.

Iterating month by month, the balance first reaches or exceeds $25,000 at month 41 with a balance of $25,331.37.

Rounding rule: Required deposit is rounded up to the next cent. Balances are shown rounded half-up to the cent. Month count is a whole number (first month where balance ≥ goal).

How Your Savings Grow

Sensitivity Analysis

The table below shows how the result changes when key inputs vary. This helps you understand the impact of saving a little more or less, earning a slightly different APY, or adjusting your target date.

Month-by-Month Growth

The table below shows the balance at the end of each month. The chart visualizes the same data with a goal reference line.

Assumptions and Limitations

  • Constant APY for the entire period. Real savings accounts change rates; this is an estimate.
  • Deposits at the end of each month (ordinary annuity). Some accounts compound daily; APY already reflects compounding frequency.
  • No withdrawals, fees, or taxes on interest.
  • No minimum balance requirements or tiered rate structures.
  • Inflation adjustment (if used) applies a constant annual rate to express the goal in today's dollars.
  • FDIC deposit insurance covers up to $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. This calculator does not model insurance limits.
  • Results are educational estimates, not financial, tax, or legal advice.

Common Mistakes

  1. Confusing APY with the nominal interest rate. APY includes compounding; the nominal rate does not. Always use APY for savings projections.
  2. Forgetting that deposits are at month-end. If you deposit at the beginning of the month, you earn one extra month of interest. This calculator uses end-of-month convention.
  3. Using a simple monthly rate (APY/12) instead of the compound monthly rate. The correct monthly rate is (1+APY)^(1/12)−1. At 4% APY, APY/12 = 0.333% but the true monthly rate is 0.327%.
  4. Not rounding the required deposit up. Rounding down means you fall short of the goal. This calculator rounds up to the next cent.
  5. Assuming the APY is guaranteed. Savings account rates are variable and can change at any time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between APY and the interest rate?
APY (Annual Percentage Yield) reflects the total interest earned in one year including compounding. The nominal interest rate does not include compounding. Regulation DD (12 CFR Part 1030) requires banks to disclose APY so consumers can compare accounts fairly. Source: CFPB, Regulation DD, 12 CFR §1030.2 and Appendix A.
Is my savings account insured?
Deposits at FDIC-insured banks are insured up to $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. Credit unions have similar NCUA coverage. Check that your institution is FDIC or NCUA insured. Source: FDIC, "Your Insured Deposits" (fdic.gov).
Does this calculator account for taxes on interest?
No. Interest on savings accounts is generally taxable as ordinary income at the federal level and may be taxable at the state level. Consult a tax professional for your situation.
What if my bank compounds daily instead of monthly?
APY already accounts for the compounding frequency. A 4.00% APY means the effective annual return is 4.00% regardless of whether the bank compounds daily, monthly, or quarterly. This calculator converts APY to a monthly rate for month-by-month projection.
Can I use this for investment accounts?
This calculator is designed for savings accounts with a stated APY. Investment returns are not guaranteed and fluctuate. For investment projections, use an investment return calculator with appropriate risk assumptions.
What happens if I enter a goal less than my current savings?
The calculator will indicate that your goal has already been reached and no additional deposits are needed.

Glossary

APY (Annual Percentage Yield)
The effective annual rate of return including compounding, as defined by Regulation DD (12 CFR Part 1030).
Compounding
Earning interest on previously earned interest. APY reflects the compounding frequency.
End-of-month deposit (ordinary annuity)
A deposit made at the end of each period. The first deposit earns interest starting the next month.
Inflation-adjusted goal
The nominal goal amount reduced by expected inflation to express its purchasing power in today's dollars.
Nominal goal
The stated dollar amount of the savings target, not adjusted for inflation.
Regulation DD / Truth in Savings
Federal regulation (12 CFR Part 1030) requiring uniform disclosure of deposit account terms, including APY.
